Home Automation: Bringing Total Home Control Home
New technologies and a simpler lifestyle pretty much go hand in hand
these days. We want it fast, we want it easy, and we want to be able
to control it all with the touch of a button.
Let’s face it, when you think hi-tech you usually think high
price tag, especially when it comes to those “hidden” technologies,
like home automation and lighting control. But now, companies, like
Crestron bring these systems in reach, using the “building blocks” principle-
start small and go from there.
It’s a start
When it comes to Crestron home automation,
entry level systems aren’t so “entry level.” For
about $3500 you’re well on your way towards a full blown automation
system. And the beauty of these add on systems is that you can upgrade
when you’ve got the need, and the cash.
Step it up
The Crestron starter system is mainly
a music system, offering a
tuner and six keypads. All you need
to do is add speakers and wiring for multi-zone music throughout your
home. Multi-zone music means you can listen to different sources in
different areas. Like, a CD in the kitchen and Sirius Satellite Radio
in the den.
Then, you can add another $2000 for the interface to incorporate your
home theater and other electronic systems into your home automation.
So, for around $5500, including programming, you’ve got a well-rounded
system that can control just about anything electronic in the home like
heating and air, motorized window treatments, even your gas fireplace.
Just remember, you’ll need to plan on spending an additional $3000
to $4000 on each touchpanel depending on size and capability.
Control on the go
The biggest perk with Crestron,
is that you can take your home
automation “on the road.” Thanks
to the Internet, Crestron lets you dial into your system from just
about anywhere in the world.
Need to check your home’s camera surveillance while on vacation?
No problem. Want your house at the perfect 71 degrees when you get home
from work? Easy- simply dial-in an hour before your arrival and turn
your heat up. Crestron gives you the same control from your laptap or
your home touchpanel.
Another great feature is Crestron’s telephone interface, CEN-TIA.
CEN-TIA connects to a regular phone line or system to provide a speakerphone
on your touchpanel with built-in microphone and speakers. It also displays
Caller ID information and also acts as an intercom system.
Electronic concierge
As if controlling your favorite
movie while dimming the lights
and adjusting the surround sounds
wasn’t
easy enough, with MDU (Multi Dwelling Unit) things just got simpler.
If you live in a condominium or residential development, you’re
in luck. MDU combines your Crestron home automation system with an
amenities management system. It’s like having your own personal
concierge.
MDU is customized to fit the developments amenities such as golf course,
restaurant, spa and even equestrian center. And with the push of a button,
you can make dinner reservations, or book a tee time. And that’s
not all; MDU also incorporates services like dry cleaning pickup, dog
walking, grocery delivery and package pick ups. Plus, like standard
Crestron systems, you can access all this from your home touchpanel,
or any computer via the Internet.
So, what’s the plan, man?
Home automation will simplify your
lifestyle- if it’s installed correctly. Make sure to research
local audio/video companies before signing the contract. Not sure who
to use? Ask around. Referrals are the best way to ensure you’re
getting the most for your money. Beyond that, only hire a company with
certified installers and a dedicated service department.
