Smart Home LifestyleNovember 4, 2006 Lighting control systems simplify your lifestyle while adding ambianceAsk any good interior designer about your new home’s lighting, and you’re libel to get the lowdown on fixtures and ceiling fans. But, what about controlling the lighting in your home? These days, there’s more than just the flip of a switch. Customized wired and wireless lighting systems put you in control, while adding ambiance and eliminating “wall clutter.” So, how does it work? The principal behind lighting control systems is simple. Low voltage wiring is connected from a control system computer to switches, dimmers and control keypads around you home. Control keypads talk to the computer and turn on and off various switches and dimmers, based on preprogrammed commands. Dimmers may also be dimmed and brightened at these control keypad locations. Any switch and dimmer that is connected to the computer can be controlled from any control keypad button throughout the home. Well, what’s the big deal?Improved aesthetics is a huge perk. First, consider “wall clutter.” It’s like that $1.5 million dollar mansion that has a few rows of those $1.50 plastic switch plate right by the front door- eye-sores, galore. Lighting control systems use multi button keypads that can control multiple lights or lighting scenes. The actual switches get moved to a closet or mechanical room, so there’s always a backup. Scene selection is another plus. Since these systems are completely customizable, you can create “welcome” scenes, “dinner party” scenes, even “putting on makeup” or “all lights off” scenes. Various lights can be grouped together to create a “lighting look;” they can even all be set at different dim levels. One touch of a button controls each individual scene. Any more perks? Most lighting control systems integrate with other home electronic systems. Security can trigger lighting scenes if a fire or burglar alarm goes off. Home automation systems can initiate lighting scenes to enhance the dramatic effects of your home theater. You can even control your system via your cell phone. And, the best benefit? You’ll save money in energy costs. According to Lutron Electronics Co., Inc., an incandescent light level of 90% can save 10% in electricity costs and extend the lamp life by two times. An incandescent light level of 50% can save 40% in electricity costs and extend the lamp life by 20 times. A fluorescent light level of 90% can save 10% in electricity costs and a light level of 50% can save up to 50%. Over time, an installed lighting control system could practically pay for itself. What about existing home?No problem- go wireless. Lutron (www.lutron.com), for one, offers some great wireless options, just remember, they’ll be more pricey than the wired options, so only use on a “need-be” basis. "Lutron has made it simple for contractors to upgrade their clients from a standard toggle switch to an easy-to-install lighting control system,” said Tom Murphy, product manager at Lutron Electronics. “An AuroRa package can be installed in the same amount of time as five switches, but offers homeowners the ability to create pathways of light into, and throughout their home.” The AuroRa five-dimmer package runs $750, and comes in several colors including white, ivory and almond. This entry-level lighting control package provides a more simplified lighting control, and is a great single-room solution for kitchens, media rooms, home theaters, or outdoor lighting.
